V-Steaming: What it is (and why your body is craving it!)

Welcome to Part One in my series on V-Steaming Basics

V-Steaming, Yoni steaming, pelvic steaming, vaginal steaming.

No matter what you call it, it’s amazing. While the thought of pampering your lady parts with steam might sound like some new twist on self-care, in reality, steaming is a practice that is well-rooted in many culture’s traditions.  If this is all quite new and perplexing to you, stay with me for a moment while I explain.

Put simply, vaginal steaming is an ancient healing practice using herbs and steam (or sometimes simply steam) to support the pelvic region, for various reasons.

How is it done? Basically, you sit (or even kneel) over a bowl of steam for anywhere from 10-30 minutes.  This steam is often done with an herb concoction – a tea – that is specific to the needs of the client, though, there can be benefits from even simply steaming with plain water.  The herb selection, however, is very important.  For example, those who have a tendency to have a cycle that is too long will have a different blend of herbs than someone who is struggling with short cycles or breakthrough bleeding.  The right herb selection can naturally treat and support any gynecological trouble – I like to call it a gynecologist in a box.

If you are curious about HOW vaginal steaming works, there are four main ways I’d like to bring to your attention:

  1. Vaginal steaming can improve uterine function by increasing circulation.  Exposure to heat from steam causes vasodilation which increases circulation to the exposed area, as well as the uterine blood vessels.  As with any organ, increasing circulation helps to improve overall function and vitality so it can perform its functions more effectively.
  2. Steam may increase the efficiency of the natural womb cleanse (your “period”). While the womb should complete this on its own, a variety of things can impede complete removal of uterine lining.
  3. Steam may reduce susceptibility to infections by draining out irregular discharge.  By draining irregular discharge, the vagina is better able to maintain a suitable pH and healthy flora.
  4. Steam may deep clean skin cells, clearing our impurities and contributing to regeneration of cells.  This can help with reduction or elimination of swollen or inflamed bumps, ingrown hairs, clogged ducts, and related issues.

As you can see, vaginal steaming can have some serious positive effects on your body, no matter which stage you are at in your reproductive journey

Stay tuned for part two of the v-steaming basics series, where I’ll be digging into WHO vaginal steaming is for!
